Garmin Rino 650 Disassembly Guide

Step 1: Remove the Battery

Switch off the device before proceeding.

Flip over the Garmin Rino 650 and identify the battery latch on the rear side of the device. 

Lift the metal D-ring latch, turn it about 90 degrees anticlockwise and remove the battery.

Should you find that your battery does not charge anymore, this is the best opportunity for you to replace the battery of your Garmin Rino 650.

Step 2: Remove the Back Housing Screws

Use a T6 Torx Screwdriver to undo the six screws fixing the casing.

Screws are found at:

  • 2 screws on each side of the external casing
  • 2 screws in the battery compartment area
  • 2 screws under the waterproof rubber covering of the upper side.

Step 3: Separate the Front and Rear Housing

Insert a plastic opening tool into the seam between the front and rear housing.

Carefully work around the edge of the device to release each retaining clip.

Avoid inserting the tool too deeply, as the waterproof rubber gasket sits just inside the housing. Damaging the gasket may reduce the device's water resistance.

Take your time to prevent tearing or deforming the sealing gasket.

Step 4: Disconnect the Internal Cables

Before fully separating the housing halves, disconnect the internal ribbon cables and connectors.

These typically include:

  • LCD display ribbon cable
  • Speaker connector
  • Additional motherboard connectors

Use a plastic spudger or fine-tip tweezers to gently lift each connector.

Never pull directly on the ribbon cables, as they can be easily damaged.

Step 5: Remove the Motherboard


Disconnect the LCD connector from the motherboard.

Carefully lift the motherboard out of its mounting position.

Slowly slide the board downward while guiding the two antenna wires out of their channels.

Avoid bending the antenna cables excessively, as they are delicate and difficult to replace.

Step 6: Remove the Screws Securing the LCD Screen

After removing the motherboard, the LCD assembly becomes accessible.

Use the T6 Torx screwdriver to remove the four screws securing the LCD module.

Note: A black sealing gasket is installed between the LCD screen and the frame. Be careful when removing the display, as this gasket can be easily damaged.

If the gasket comes off during disassembly, you'll notice two retaining tabs on its underside. These tabs fit securely into the two matching slots in the frame. The gasket is designed to install in only one orientation, so do not force it into place.

During reassembly, make sure to apply even, consistent pressure across the entire LCD screen. Uneven pressure may cause the sealing gasket to shift out of position, preventing it from seating properly between the display and the frame, as shown in the image.

Step 7: Remove the Screen for Garmin Rino 650

There are two plastic retaining clips located at the bottom of the screen frame. Once the screws have been removed, these two clips are the only parts securing the screen assembly.

Using the flat edge of a plastic spudger, apply pressure to the right side of the screen assembly and push it to the left to release the right-side plastic retaining clip.

After the retaining clip has disengaged from the frame, gently lift the screen upward. The screen assembly should come off easily.
